Behavioral History Review Committee
The University of Louisville is committed to providing a safe environment for its students, faculty, and staff. To support this, all applicants for admission are required to disclose whether they have been subject to disciplinary action for behavioral misconduct at any prior institution, including the University of Louisville, or have been convicted of any crime other than minor traffic violations.
Applicants who report such conduct will have their admissions application referred to the Behavioral History Review Committee (BHRC) for a thorough and holistic review as part of the admissions process. If the applicant is otherwise considered eligible for admission, the BHRC may recommend one of the following:
- admission without conditions
- admission with specific conditions (e.g., restricted access to certain campus areas, housing restrictions, counseling, a written assignment, or no-contact orders)
- denial of admission
BHRC Policies & Procedures
- Applicants will be informed that their application is incomplete until all information regarding criminal convictions or disciplinary history is submitted to the University. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide the necessary records and documents. Failure to provide truthful information on the application and/or supporting documents may result in revocation of admission, removal from the University, or disciplinary action.
- Once the required documentation is received, the appropriate admissions authority will initiate a preliminary review in conjunction with the Chair of the BHRC. If the preliminary review results in a mutual agreement, the applicant may proceed through the regular admissions process without restriction.
- Applicants who cannot be cleared in the preliminary review, or those who may face denial or admission with conditions, will be referred to the full BHRC for further evaluation.
- The review of criminal and/or disciplinary disclosures typically takes 4 to 6 weeks once received by the BHRC.
Applicants for admission or readmission must disclose any prior criminal convictions (excluding minor traffic violations) or disciplinary history on their application. If they report such history, it is the applicant's responsibility to provide the following documentation along with their application.
- For criminal convictions other than minor traffic violations:
- A statement explaining the circumstances of each conviction;
- Location (city, state, country) of the conviction(s) of previous conduct, dates, and court disposition; and
- Documentation (police and/or court records) for all such convictions. UofL will not contact a court clerk or attorney on behalf of the applicant.
- For prior disciplinary history:
- A statement explaining the circumstances of each instance of discipline;
- Location and name of institution, dates, and nature of the case;
- Any documents the applicant believes relevant or helpful;
- Certification of disciplinary history from previous institution(s); and
- Permission from the applicant for the University of Louisville to have complete access to any previous disciplinary records.
An applicant denied admission due to previous misconduct at an educational institution and/or criminal conduct may appeal the decision in writing to the BHRC within 15 days of the denial notification. The appeal must include new information that was not available during the initial review and that may impact the decision. To initiate the appeal, the applicant must submit the BHRC online appeal form, outlining the grounds for the appeal and requesting reconsideration.
Applications for admission to the University of Louisville require disclosure of any criminal history (excluding minor traffic violations), arrests, suspensions, or expulsions. If a student is found to have failed to fully disclose their history, the Dean of Students Office will review the case. If the failure to disclose is deemed grounds for disciplinary action, the University may rescind admission and/or the student may face immediate dismissal or charges under the Code of Student Conduct.
