Eligibility
All currently enrolled University of Louisville students may use the Center's services. Students must be enrolled in summer classes in order to begin therapy during the summer. Students must be located in the state of KY to receive services--if not in KY, we will speak with students by phone to help them get connected to services in their area.
*Faculty and staff seeking services (even if taking classes) should contact the UofL Employee Assistance Program, Human Development Company for services.
Counseling Services
If you feel that you are in crisis, and you need to meet with a counselor right away, you can walk-in or call request to speak to a counselor during our normal business hours of 9am-4pm. We have counselors on duty who are usually able to meet with you within a half an hour.
Please note that urgent consultation (UC) services are provided to UofL students on a first come, first served basis. Our busiest time is 2-4pm. You will need time to complete paperwork and see or receive a callback from a clinician. We may have to call you back/see you on the following day if there are several students ahead of you.
If you'd like to begin services at the Counseling Center, you can call 502-852-6585 M-F from 9am-4:00pm to set up an appointment for a brief 30 minute triage. During the triage, you and your clinician will decide next steps, which may include attending group, scheduling an Initial Assessment (IA), referrals to other on or off campus resources, and/or being added to our waitlist (if applicable).
During your IA, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns in more detail and consult with your clinician regarding in-person vs. telehealth services. If you have questions about this process, please contact the Counseling Center at 502-852-6585 or email.
Individual Counseling
We offer individual counseling where a student may meet with a counselor one on one on a bi-weekly basis. Some of the common issues that we address with students seeking services are stress, procrastination, adjustment to college, anxiety, depression, bipolar, trauma, difficulties with friendships or romantic relationships, identity exploration, family issues, etc.
Confidentiality
We respect students' privacy, so all communication within the Center is confidential, with a few exceptions. These exceptions are:
- when the information relates to clear and imminent danger to an individual,
- when a state law requires the reporting of information (threats of violence, child abuse or neglect, spouse abuse), and
- when information is requested by court order. Any disclosure in these situations will be made to an appropriate authority and will be limited to material directly pertinent to the issue involved.
Please note that we will not release any information obtained through interviews, counseling sessions, or testing without the written permission of a client.
Group
The idea of group can be intimidating to students who are new to counseling, but it is actually the best course of treatment for many of the things students struggle with, including social anxiety!
Groups are typically facilitated by 1-2 therapists, and they may include 5-8 participants. Groups meet for 60-90 minutes each week for the duration of the semester.
Confidentiality
Participants sign agreements stating that they will uphold confidentiality.

The Counseling Center offers biweekly couple's counseling to students. Only one member of the couple must be a currently enrolled student in order to receive this service. Couples counseling is a great way to learn to communicate more effectively, manage conflict, and learn to better meet the needs of both members of the couple.
The Counseling Center offers psychological assessment services. Common reasons that students might seek out these services are if they might suspect ADHD, Autism, a Learning Disability, or if they have been referred for other diagnostic clarification. Psychological assessments are our only service that does require an additional fee which is based on a sliding scale. Please note that we do typically have a wait list for psychological assessments. Also, the assessment process is lengthy and may require multiple weeks of 3-4 hour long appointments.
The Counseling Center is able to provide outreach or workshops on request. Due to our busy schedules, we do typically ask for at least 2-3 weeks notice. To submit an outreach request please complete the following form, and we will be in contact.
