Salute to Service veteran and dependent scholarship
The Salute to Service Scholarship (S2S) is designed for the advancement of veterans of any branch of the U.S. military, as defined by USC 38 U.S. Code § 101,” a person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable”, or the dependent of a veteran as defined by USC 38 U.S. Code § 101. The S2S scholarship is open to all eligible students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age.
The S2S Scholarship is proudly supported by the Louisville Honor Earned, Remembrance Owed ( H.E.R.O.) Run. The H.E.R.O. Run/Walk/Ruck honors those who died in battle and those we lost at home to the psychological wounds of war. It takes place on and around the University of Louisville’s campus on the Saturday after Memorial Day.
Award amount
Salute to Service Scholarship awards range from $500-1000 each. The scholarships can be used for any university expense (tuition, fees, meal plan, university housing, etc.). This scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable award.
Criteria
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Enrolled, full-time (at least 12 hours), degree seeking student; enrolled in at least 3 hours for Summer Terms
- Be in good academic standing, with a 3.0 overall grade point average; or high school applicant with a 3.5 grade point average
- Be a veteran, spouse, or dependent. (Active duty students receive the discounted tuition rate, therefore they are not eligible)
- Can be pursuing any major or course of study
Application Process

2. Send an email from your UofL student email account, in the "subject line" include Your name, your student ID #, and “Summer 2025 Salute to Service Scholarship.” (ex: First & Last Name 1234567 Summer 2025 Salute to Service Scholarship)
3. Attach an Adobe PDF 500-word essay to your email stating whether you are a veteran or a dependent, and explaining how the scholarship will help you attain your educational goals.
4. Attach an unofficial academic transcript with most recent semester/term of college. First semester college students will submit their final high school transcript.
5. Veteran status will be confirmed by attaching a Department of Defense (DD) Form 214.
6. OR Dependent status will be confirmed by attaching of copy of Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) dependent identification card. For dependents who do not have DEERS dependent identification card, attach veterans DD 214 and child’s birth certificate identifying veteran as parent, or marriage license for spouse.
Submit the required items # 1-6 above to milconstu@louisville.edu by the following deadlines.
- For Summer Terms: by April 22nd
- For Fall Terms: by August 1st
- For Spring Terms: by November 15th
Applications not meeting the criteria outlined above, or which do not include the required documentation will not be considered. Scholarship recipients will be notified by email approximately 1 week after deadlines.
This scholarship is named in memory of Norman Roggenkamp a UofL student who left school to fight in World War II. It is designed for the advancement of a veteran student or the descendent of a veteran. He became a B-24 pilot serving with the 8th Air Force out of the United Kingdom. On June 24, 1944, his aircraft was shot down, killing him and five members of his crew. The scholarship(s) will be in support of undergraduate or graduate education. Award amount varies by Academic Year, usually around $2,800 per Fall and Spring semesters. Scholarship is awarded to one student and is awarded each semester until graduation. The Roggenkamp scholarship is open to all eligible students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age.

Apply for this scholarship at the point of application to the University of Louisville
This scholarship is for the benefit of students who have financial need and are pursuing a degree in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, with a preference given to student in chemical engineering. It is designed for the advancement of a Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet, an active-duty service member, an honorably discharged veteran of the United States military, or the dependent of an honorably discharged veteran of the United States military. For each academic year, $15,000 is available for award to one or more students meeting the following criteria. If a student maintains the required GPA, the award is renewable. The Panter-Decker scholarship is open to all eligible students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age.
Criteria
Students will be eligible for the scholarship by meeting one or more of the following criteria, in order of preference:
- A student currently enrolled in the Air Force/Army ROTC at the University of Louisville
- An active-duty or honorably discharged veteran of the United States military
- The dependent (i.e., spouse, child) of an active-duty or honorably discharged veteran of the United States military
- If the above criteria cannot be met, the donors’ preference is that the scholarship be awarded to a female chemical engineering student who has at least a 3.25 GPA and has completed the essay requirement found in Paragraph 3.C. infra.

Submission of a 500- to 750-word essay that addresses:
- If an ROTC student – How will a University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering education prepare you to be a leader and an officer in the U.S. Military?
- If an active-duty or veteran student – How has your service in the U.S. Military prepared you for a college education at the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering, and what have you learned about yourself?
- If a female engineering student – How is the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering preparing you to be a leader, what activities or life events are influencing your leadership skill set, and how do you anticipate leadership will be displayed in your career?

This award is in memory of AJ Kramer (2013 Speed School – Chemical Engineering), who died in a motorcycle accident several months after commissioning. It is designed for the advancement of a graduating Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet. Award amount varies per academic year, approximately $1,500 per year. The AJ Kramer scholarship is open to all eligible students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age.
Criteria
Award recipients must meet the following criteria:
- Graduating senior, being commissioned, in Air Force ROTC
- Best exemplifies the spirit and example of AJ Kramer through their leadership as a cadet in the Air Force ROTC program
- Leads by example and demonstrates strong integrity, initiative, diplomacy and commitment to their fellow cadet
- The Air Force ROTC Leadership will select the finalists, of commissioning cadets, who best exhibit these qualities; the cadets will then vote on the finalist to receive the award
- Will be awarded annually during the Air Force ROTC spring ceremony
- Recipients of this annual, cash award, are encouraged to use the funds toward expenses related to their move and graduation
- If no cadet meets these criteria in a given year, the funds may used to support leadership activities in the Air Force ROTC Program, as decided by the program's colonel.
