Mentoring
Make your college transition easier.
Mentoring
The high school to college transition isn't easy, and it can make a huge difference in your experience when you have someone who can help by providing advice, guidance and resources tailored to exactly what you want and need to make the most of your time at UofL.
UofL offers peer mentoring and faculty/staff mentoring opportunities that new students can take part in. The programs are each a little different, but the benefits are the same.
- Community-building and connection with fellow students, faculty and staff
- Introduction to academic & campus resources
- Leadership opportunities through campus organizations and other involvement
- Resources for a successful college transition
- Support that sets you up for success during your college career and beyond

Become an Ambassador Peer Mentor
Nobody knows the UofL experience better than our current students, and that's a big reason why peer mentor programs are so important. Mentors can help students negotiate college transitions, form campus connections and help facilitate student success. As a mentor, you’ll share your lessons learned and tricks of the trade, and you’ll offer your valuable insights about the inevitable academic and personal challenges new students often encounter.
What does an Ambassador Peer Mentor do?
Ambassador Peer Mentors are part of the Student Success Center and provide support to first-generation and Exploratory (undecided and pre-unit) students at the University of Louisville. Ambassador Peer Mentors help first-year students negotiate college transitions, form campus connections and facilitate student success by guiding, supporting and advising them throughout the fall semester with first-generation peer mentoring continuing through the spring semester. Peer Mentors make a difference in the lives of our first-generation and Exploratory students, and this is your opportunity to make a positive impact for these students.
ExploratoryAmbassador Peer Mentors
Ambassadors mentoring Exploratory students also serve as undergraduate teaching assistants, supporting the instructors of Exploratory academic orientation courses. The students enrolled in the course are the Ambassador's mentees for the fall semester. These peer mentors also assist with registration during summer orientation sessions and during the fall and spring registration periods.
Ambassadors mentoring Exploratory students are paid for their classroom time and weekly office hours. In the fall semester this is about 4-6 hours peer week. Ambassadors continuing through the spring semester will work approximately 2-4 hours per week.
First-generation Peer Mentors
Ambassadors mentoring first-generation students provide their students mentoring throughout the students' first fall and spring semesters. They will alternate between holding weekly group mentoring sessions and attending 1st Up Program workshops.
