Building Your UofL Degree

Your degree is built of many components, including Cardinal Core (General Education), Major, Supporting/Programmatic, and Elective courses. The Undergraduate Catalog will list all of the requirements for your degree. Please work with your assigned academic advisor to ensure you take courses that meet your requirements!

The base of every degree is Cardinal Core (Gen Ed). These are 31 credit hours of courses that are required for all majors. Cardinal Core includes:

  • Written Communication (WC) - 6 hours
  • Oral Communication (OC) - 3 hours
  • Quantitative Reasoning (QR) - 3-4 hours
  • Natural Sciences and Lab (S, SL, B) - 7 hours; need two science courses in different subjects, and one with a matching lab. (B) courses are 4 credits and have a built-in lab.
  • Arts/Humanities (AH) - 6 hours; need two courses in different subjects.
  • Soc/Beh Historical Perspective (SBH) - 3 hours; cannot be in same subject as SB course.
  • Social Behavioral (SB) - 3 hours; cannot be in same subject as SBH course.
  • US Diversity (D1) - 3 hours; can come from courses in other Cardinal Core areas.
  • Global Diversity (D2) - 3 hours; can come from courses in other Cardinal Core areas.

Major courses are specific courses in the subject you've chosen as your major. For example, an Anthropology major would have certain Anthropology courses to complete.

Supporting/Programmatic courses vary depending on your degree unit/school and major. Supporting courses are typically related to your major, but are classes from other disciplines. Programmatic courses are usually required by a specific unit/school (ex. most Arts & Sciences degrees require a foreign language).

The final components of a degree are Elective courses. Many, but not all, majors allow for a specific number of electives. Some majors require electives in a particular category, but many electives can be in any subject you are interested in.

Steps to Choosing a College Major

The Exploratory & Transition Advising Team recommends four steps to helping you choose a major. We want you to remember that Majors ≠ Careers. Most times the path from a major to a career is not linear. Your degree, experience, and network all impact your future.

1. Know Yourself - we can help you explore your personality, interests, skills, values, strengths, and experiences that shape who you are and your approach to the world. This can help you narrow down your options and evaluate the information you gather in the next steps.

  • Personality: You can take the free assessment at 16personalities.com and read about your results, explore related strengths and weaknesses, and learn how your personality can impact your relationships, friendships, career paths, and workplace habits. Another fun assessment is True Colors - take them both and compare your results!
  • Values: Knowing your values can influence the choices you make, help you use your time wisely, inspire and motivate you, and help you make informed, purposeful decisions. You can do a free values sort at https://www.think2perform.com/our-approach/values/new and reflect on why you've chosen them.
  • Strengths: There are many campus courses and student groups that use Strengths for Students to help you uncover your top 5 strengths themes. If you don't get the opportunity otherwise, you can pay for and take the assessment at https://www.strengthsquest.com/home.aspx.
  • Interests: Take some time to reflect on these questions, and share your thoughts with your academic advisor! What do you think about a lot? What are you amazing at doing? Who inspires you? What to people come to you for help with? Who do you want to help? When you're at your best, what does it look like? Whose lives would you like to change?
  • Experiences: What are some of the most impactful things you've experienced, lessons you've learned, and accomplishments you're most proud of?

2. Identify Your Options - look at the list of UofL majors below, or this list of UofL Majors/Minors so you can familiarize yourself with the options that are available.

3. Research - once you have identified possible majors of interest, you should research degree requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog, search department websites for more information about the major and involvement/career opportunities, review the Schedule of Classes to see what courses you would take, talk to people in that major and ask questions, and gather information about what you can do with each major of interest.

4. Evaluate - after completing the above steps, you should have enough information to evaluate your options and determine your next steps. Consider the pros/cons of each major you have explored - timeline to graduation (complete a ULink What-If Report), are you interested in the courses, does it fit your worldview? Evaluate the requirements for being admitted to the major, and determine if you are willing and able to do the work to get there. Consider the connection and community within that major, and evaluate if it feels like it fits you. Evaluate your aptitude at being successful in the coursework.

Sometimes you will need to complete this process multiple times as your interests change. We can help you stick with the process and stay on track!
