How We Help
Each student has a different path, and we know about so many opportunities that we can share to help you find your fit at UofL. That's our whole mission! Together with the university's and the College of Arts & Sciences' advising practices, we provide individualized guidance to support students like you in the thoughtful exploration of education plans that meet you academic and career goals.
We'll help you:
- Assess your strengths, interests, values, and skills to select an appropriate major.
- Use campus and academic support services to reach your academic goals.
- Develop skills in self-advocacy, confidence, and strategies for academic success.
- Transition to your academic program of choice.
Can We Advise You?
All Undecided and Pre-Unit students are required to meet with their Exploratory & Transition Advisor each semester, but any undergrad at UofL can make an appointment with us at any time.
We're happy to help you if you're in any of these situations:
- you're questioning your current major
- you have become undecided
- you want to talk about getting admitted to a major in a different school or college at UofL (for example, switching from Nursing to Business)
- you're a returning student and not sure what major to pursue
We work with students who are:
Undecided
You're an undecided student if you're still unsure of which major you want to pursue in college. Don't worry! This is a normal part of college. Your Exploratory & Transition advisor will guide you through your personal major and career exploration process. We will help you develop an understanding of how your personality, interests, abilities, and values align with academic and career fields.
Pre-Unit
If you were admitted as or changed to a Pre-Unit plan (like Pre-Business, Pre-Dental Hygiene, Pre-Education, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Music, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Public Health, or Pre-Social Work), this means there are additional admission requirements you need to meet to be admitted to the academic unit of your choice. Your Exploratory & Transition advisor will map out the steps to meet these requirements and help guide you to academic success.
Returning
If you are a former UofL student who would like to return to the University, we invite you to meet with an Exploratory & Transition advisor. We can help you explore majors, get updates on admission requirements, discuss academic options, and more! You can call us to set up an appointment.
Transfer
If you are a transfer student (you're coming to UofL from another institution), and are admitted as Undecided or Pre-Unit, you will be assigned to an Exploratory & Transition advisor after your first advising appointment with them. We will help you choose a major or get admitted to your unit of choice.
Prospective
Exploratory & Transition advisors are happy to meet with you even if you haven't been admitted to the University of Louisville yet. If you're unsure of majors or programs, want to know what's required to get into a desired major, or just want to see what UofL has to offer, just schedule a time to meet with us and we'll show you how we can help!

Coming prepared will get you the most from your advising meetings. Here are some tips for getting ready:
- Check your progress with the Academic Catalog, and note the classes you've taken or are enrolled in that fulfill requirements.
- Make a list of potential classes for next semester. Consider the following:
- Elective courses and your interests.
- Courses to explore majors or minors that you might be interested in.
- Requirements you need for your major or to get admitted to your major of choice.
- General Education requirements you haven't fulfilled yet.
- Jot down any questions/concerns you have about your college experience so far.
