PROGRAM CURRENTLY CLOSED The Betty and David Jones Scholars application is now closed. The application will re-open in 2026.
Betty and David Jones both received their baccalaureate degrees from the University of Louisville. After graduation, they were lifelong supporters of the university and dedicated philanthropists, donating millions to various causes that included housing initiatives and public parks.
The Betty and David Jones Scholars Program was established in 2006 to support continuing students with excellent academic achievement at the undergraduate level. Students are chosen at the end of their first year at the University of Louisville to participate in the program for the rest of their undergraduate career.
The David and Betty Jones Scholarship award recognizes collegiate academic excellence and empowers students to pursue meaningful research and creative work. The Jones Scholars Program focuses on facilitating undergraduate research and creative activity by connecting participating students with faculty mentors and promoting hands-on research opportunities.
Jones Scholars gain invaluable experience through:
- Personalized faculty mentorship relationships
- Guided research or creative projects in their field of study
- Exclusive networking through Jones Scholars programs and events (typically 3-4 per semester)
- Professional development opportunities that enhance graduate school and career readiness
Selected Jones Scholars receive a $2,000 scholarship for their first academic year ($1,000 per semester). The award is renewable based on GPA and meeting program expectations for two additional years (junior and senior), providing up to $6,000 in total scholarship support.
Beyond financial support, Jones Scholars join an exclusive community of high-achieving students committed to academic excellence and research innovation.
Jones Scholarships are awarded competitively based on the following criteria:
- Minimum UofL cumulative GPA of 3.50
- Entering sophomore year status
- Current scholarships covering less than 50% of total cost of attendance
- Demonstrated interest in undergraduate research or creative activity
- Three full years remaining in undergraduate career
The Jones Scholars Program welcomes applications from all eligible students who demonstrate academic excellence and research potential. Ideal candidates may or may not have prior research experience but should articulate how research or creative activity aligns with their academic and career goals.
Successful applicants typically:
- Show strong academic performance and intellectual curiosity
- Demonstrate commitment to scholarly growth and discovery
- Express clear interest in faculty mentorship and collaborative research
- Exhibit potential for meaningful contribution to their field of study
When applications reopen in 2026, candidates must submit:
- Official transcript - demonstrating academic excellence
- Personal statement (400-500 words) - outlining educational goals and research interests
- Two letters of recommendation - submitted directly by recommenders
All application materials must be complete by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the selection committee.
