Attend a workshop

The Cards SPEAK initiative offers two suicide prevention trainings to faculty, staff and students: QPR and It’s Real. Both workshops run for about 1.5 hours and can be offered virtually or in-person, though in-person is encouraged to enhance the participant's learning experience. Both workshops offer the opportunity for discussion between participants and trainer(s).

Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR)

The 3 simple steps to help save a life from suicide. QPR enhances the participant’s knowledge, awareness, empathic listening skills, communication skills concerning college student suicide, and the ability to compassionately and directly ask students about suicidal thoughts. After this training, participants will

  • Recognize the warning signs of suicide
  • Know how to offer hope
  • Know how to get help and save a life

It’s Real

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)-produced film, It’s Real: College Students and Mental Health, is designed to raise awareness about mental health issues commonly experienced by students.

Featuring college students' true stories and experiences, It’s Real conveys that depression and other mental health conditions are real illnesses that can be managed through specific treatments and interventions. It encourages students to be mindful of the state of their mental health, to acknowledge and recognize when they are struggling and to take steps to seek help.
